Investment Committee Focus: Endowments Investing to Advance Racial Equity

Advance your understanding of fiduciary duties and strategic opportunities, especially around the work of an Investment Committee, as we highlight several specific legal structures that are permitted for tax-exempt entities and charitable fiduciaries, which a for-profit investor or charitable grantmaker might use to advance racial equity by sharing legal ownership and control among that funder and individuals.

We invite you to join us as we consider how legal and financial structures can best support individuals and existing communities and institutions in order to advance racial equity.  Learn about both charitable and prudent investments, bridging philanthropy and commerciality, and navigating overlap and collaborations among nonprofit and traditional financial sectors.

Fiduciaries of restricted funds must navigate issues of prudence and federal tax law in structuring an investment portfolio.  Marla K. Conley will describe the legal framework under federal tax-exempt law and state fiduciary standards, and our experienced panelists will offer practical perspectives on implementing these models, which offer opportunities for investors to participate in the appreciation of capital assets at various levels in a financing tier or to help a grantee charity innovate and modernize its own corporate structure.

  • Wilfredo Hernandez, Founder + Director, Communitas Arts + Culture, LLC
