DAY 2 CONCURRENT SESSION | Power-building, Trust, and Co-creation: the Role of a Community Action Team in Equitable Grantmaking

This session will focus on the role and experience of the Community Action Team for the Dr. Frank E. Boston Black Justice Fund. The session will explore how the creation and facilitation of the Community Action Team incorporated power-building strategies and principles of trust-based philanthropy. This focus created a space for open and dynamic dialogue that centered justice and liberation.

With the goal of supporting community-driven solutions, HealthSpark Foundation established the Dr. Frank E. Boston Black Justice Fund in December 2020. As we embarked on the development of the Fund, our first step was to engage a group of community advisors, the Community Action Team, to co-create the purpose of the Fund.

HealthSpark Foundation understands the long history of systemic racism that has marginalized Black and Brown communities from accessing capital and philanthropic resources to support their communities, institutions, and organizations. We are seeking avenues to address this issue as we fundamentally believe that lasting solutions will emerge from the community for the community. This session will hear directly from members of the Community Action Team and highlight their experience in creating a Fund responsive to the community.
