The COVID-19 pandemic has laid bare the consequences of siloed philanthropy and the imperative to accelerate intersectional, multi-level work, with particular attention to integrating the HIV and COVID-19 responses with racial justice efforts in the U.S.

While a recent FCAA report –  Converging Epidemics: COVID-19, HIV and Inequality –  highlights many positive and responsive funder practices, it is clear from community networks and groups’ feedback that much is left to be done.

One of the key recommendations for funders from that report was to provide long-term core support for movements and community-based organizations. In this next FCAA Connect Webinar, we will explore one foundation’s approach.

Join this conversation with the Ford Foundation’s Building Institutions and Networks (BUILD) initiative and South Africa’s Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) to explore how BUILD supports social justice organizations to become stronger and more resilient over time.

By providing grantees with five years of general operating support, combined with targeted organizational strengthening support, BUILD aims to equip these groups with the strategic clarity, people, knowledge, and resources they need to achieve impact and advance systems change over the course of years and decades.    Ford has committed $2 billion since 2015 to this program, which has served over 350 organizations worldwide, including TAC.

In 2020, the Ford Foundation joined with 800 other grant giving entities in signing the Council on Foundations philanthropy pledge, to provide grantees with the flexibility and grace to respond quickly and confidently in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.   The Foundation views its additional 2021 commitment to BUILD ($1 billion) as part of its commitment to fulfilling this pledge.
