Join Fund for Shared Insight and their special guests to learn about their recent experience with participatory grantmaking.

Last year, Fund for Shared Insight launched a participatory grantmaking initiative exploring power-sharing around the decisions funders make in supporting advocacy and policy work aimed at issues of climate change and environmental justice.

Shared Insight recruited teams of people with relevant knowledge, experience in community decision-making, and connections with communities and the land around them to create a purpose statement, design a grantmaking plan, and, ultimately, select grantees and funding allocations. In January, they announced that 35 grassroots groups would receive a total of $2 million.

During this webinar, you will hear participants:

  • Describe the arc of the participatory design and participatory grantmaking processes.
  • Share the tools we used for consensus-based decision-making.
  • Highlight choice points in the design process that prioritized frontline groups least heard in traditional grantmaking processes, namely groups led by and serving Indigenous, Black, and Latino/Hispanic communities.
  • Hear from three Grantmaking Group members.
  • Explore tensions and trade-offs between trust-based and participatory approaches.

This one-hour event will feature Grantmaking Group members Billy Kinney and Crystal Yankawgé Nelson from the Kolea Region, consisting of Alaska and Hawai’i, and Reverend Leo Woodberry from the Southeastern United States region, and Katy Love and Winifred Olliff, consultants co-leading Shared Insight’s participatory grantmaking initiative.
