Press release
Coatesville, Pennsylvania - The Alliance for Health Equity is honored to announce a new scholarship opportunity, the Judy Spangler Memorial Scholarship to support an African American high school female student who wants to pursue a college degree at any institution. The Judy Spangler Memorial Scholarship will award one Coatesville Area School District student, every four years, a 4-year scholarship totaling $20,000.
The Judy Spangler Memorial Scholarship was established by three of her former colleagues to honor the legacy of Judy Dunson Spangler. Judy was committed to youth and Coatesville during her time serving on The Alliance’s board from 2018 - 2022 and as Chief Program Officer of Big Brothers Big Sisters Independence Region from 2001-2018. During her time at The Alliance, Judy led the development of The Alliance’s strategic plan of Integrated Services, Healthy Environments, and Community-Voice for the Greater Coatesville community. She also served on the Governance Committee to ensure the Board leadership was reflective of the community served. Thousands of youth received a mentor under Judy’s leadership at Big Brothers Big Sisters Independence.
“We are thrilled to be partnering with both The Alliance for Health Equity and the Newlin Foundation as we remember the distinguished life of Judy Spangler” said Jennifer Carroll, member of the Advisory Committee for the Scholarship Fund. “Judy was taken from us much too soon, and we are honored to be carrying on her legacy in this way”.
In partnership with The Newlin Foundation, The Judy Spangler Memorial scholarship will provide the scholar with preparation for college admission, managing educational costs, and ultimately adjusting to college life. The Newlin Foundation will also provide peer support with other Newlin scholars and will monitor academic progress each semester.
Regina Lewis, Chair of the Newlin Foundation Board said, "we are very pleased to recognize Judy's vibrant, joyful and intentional leadership that had a monumental impact on the lives of many. I had the privilege of benefiting from her work both as a foster parent, receiving help from Big Brothers Big Sisters for my foster kids, and as a colleague in the non-profit community in Chester County. This scholarship pays tribute to a wonderful role model for African American girls in our community and keeps her legacy alive."
Judy was known to her friends, family, and community as a changemaker, advocate, and leader to support youth in their development, achievements, and opportunity. By donating to the Judy Spangler Memorial scholarship, an African American Coatesville student will be provided with financial and college preparatory assistance, continuing Judy’s deep commitment to better the lives of the people she served.
