During the 2020 SPARX Conference session Transforming the Social Sector: A Call to Action for 2021, Vu Le from Nonprofit AF called on us to use radical imagination to rethink how we practice philanthropy. Yet how can we translate Vu’s aspirational goals into practical action? How exactly does one begin to invest in movement building, streamline the grant application process or start spending down an endowment? - just to name a few of the changes to traditional philanthropy that Vu proposed.

In this workshop, Mike Wang from Building Impact will share a framework participants can use to move from idea to action while learning to think catalytically. Using this, he will guide participants in how to identify one action they would like to pursue and the steps they can take to begin to build a future for the region that answer’s Vu’s call for bold action.  
 

Mike Wang is a Partner at Building Impact. Prior to joining, Mike founded Leveraged Impact, a mission-driven consulting practice working with philanthropists to deepen their impact. Mike has worked in leading nonprofits and public policy for 20 years, most recently as executive director of a Philadelphia-based advocacy organization and managing director of a $100 million effort to expand high-performing schools in the city. Mike was senior vice president at Teach For America and executive director of the organization’s Mid-Atlantic region. After graduating from Tufts, Mike taught high school in Louisiana where he also served as education policy adviser to the governor and policy director to the Lt. Governor. Mike volunteers on two nonprofit boards and lives in Philadelphia with his wife and three children.
