In the past decade, rates of firearm death and injury have increased in the United States, even as violent crime overall has continued to decline. In 2021, 562 Philadelphians lost their lives to homicide, the highest total in at least half a century. This year is on track to meet, or exceed, that grim tally. Gun violence impacts the health of children and young adults, not only through direct personal injury, but also indirectly through the loss of a loved one or a child’s lost sense of safety. Now more than ever, gun violence is an urgent threat to the health and welfare of youth in Philadelphia.
