Part of Media Impact Funders' Safeguarding Media & Journalism Series

Public media is facing unprecedented challenges at both the local and national levels. Last month, the FCC opened an investigation into NPR and PBS—two of the nation’s most reliable and independent sources of journalism and public service programming—to address alleged violations of noncommercial broadcasting rules. Despite no credible evidence suggesting that NPR or PBS have broken federal law on underwriting announcements, the FCC is laying the groundwork for cutting funding to these institutions that provide millions of Americans with trusted news, educational content, and cultural enrichment.

This assault on NPR and PBS is an attack on press freedom, educational access, and the public’s right to unbiased, independent information.

Join Media Impact Funders for a special Public Media edition of our Safeguarding Media and Journalism Series as we examine the ongoing threats to the independence of public media and discuss strategies for resilience and support.

Speakers will share insights into how public media organizations are responding to administrative and policy shifts, highlighting both challenges and the approaches they’re implementing.

This urgent conversation will provide a space for funders and media leaders to come together in support of a robust and resilient public media ecosystem.
