Message from Carey Morgan, Executive Director, New Century Trust
This Women’s History Month marks the start of a new era for New Century Trust. After more than 111 years in our home at 1307 Locust Street, we have chosen to sell the building, move our offices, and recommit to the original intent of the organization – improving the lives of women and girls.
For the past year, our Board of Directors and staff have undertaken an extensive analysis of how New Century Trust can be most useful to our community. We asked hundreds of people, including historic preservationists, fellow foundations, non-profits, and community members for input on how we could be of service. Given the enormous need in our city, the growing demand for philanthropic dollars, and the increasingly complex environment for women and girls, it was clear that our resources and attention would be best used to support organizations working towards gender equality.
We are thankful for the many years we spent at 1307 Locust and are extremely grateful that the new owner is intent on keeping the historic character we all loved. We are also thrilled to be in our new home at the Friends Center, which shares our priority of social justice. In the coming months, we look forward to sharing with you our new strategy that focuses on:
- Doubling our grantmaking program to support agencies that conduct research, advocate for policies, and provide services for women and girls
- Creating additional investments to CDFIs in support of women owned small businesses in low income communities
- Aligning our endowment to ensure that we are investing in those companies that have a stellar reputation for promoting gender equity.
In this new era of NCT’s history, we build upon the passion and persistence of previous generations to forge a new philanthropic path that honors all voices, fosters understanding across all divides, and makes gender equality a reality. We welcome your best ideas for carrying this torch forward.
