Communities across Philadelphia are reimagining what systems of safety and justice looks like. In this session you will hear from community safety practitioners in an engaging dialogue on defining true public safety, facilitating resident-based initiatives, and resetting around relationships with law enforcement. The panel will explore these questions in the context of The Village of Arts & Humanities’ safety and social justice work in North Philadelphia – a neighborhood with one of the highest incarceration and poverty rates in the city.
During this interactive session, participants will hear more about what black organizers and black-led organizations will need to fight for racial justice in Philadelphia. During this session participants will get to hear from a brief panel about the experiences of black organizers in Philadelphia and get into breakout groups to brainstorm solutions and roles for philanthropy. Participants will leave with a clearer sense of the barriers and challenges faced by black organizers as well as opportunities for philanthropy to be better partners in the fight for racial justice.
This session will be the first of many dialogues to share and brainstorm what efforts are underway and how we can continue to work as a philanthropic community to reduce gun violence in the region. We encourage those attending to come ready to share and engage.
